The Hobbit Study Guide

Anything to do with The Lord of the Rings is a big hit with my children.  When the opportunity to review The Hobbit Study Guide from Progeny Press became available, there was a definite interest.  We feel blessed to be chosen as one of the product reviewers through The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew.

Allow me to introduce you to Progeny Press in case you have not heard of the company.  The Gilleland family began homeschooling in 1991.  They searched for a literature curriculum, which combined classic literature with a Christian point of view.  They were unsuccessful in their search so they created their own curriculum and opened Progeny Press in 1992.  The company has certainly grown.  According to the website:

Progeny Press has over 100 study guides for literature, covering kindergarten, elementary, middle school and high school. Progeny Press study guides concentrate on critical thinking, comprehension, literary analysis, and Christian application. Our goal is to teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on God’s scripture for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!

The study guides are available in three formats: the printed booklet, CD, and instant download.  We were fortunate enough to receive the instant download.  My daughter loves to read but prefers not to fill out workbooks or hand write reports about what she reads.  She was very happy to discover The Hobbit Study Guide is interactive!  Currently, only the middle school and high school study guides have interactive downloads.

The interactive study guide is an instant download delivered via email as a zip folder containing three files: the Read Me file, the Interactive Study Guide, and the answer key.  The Read Me file is a tutorial on how to enter text, answer the multiple choice questions, and how to underline and cross out text on the study guide, which is in a PDF format.  There are instructions for both a PC and a Mac.  I so appreciate this tutorial for I am just learning how to use all the features of Adobe Acrobat.  Of course, my computer-savvy daughter did not need the tutorial.

My daughter had finished reading The Hobbit the day before we received the study guide.  She was ready to begin as soon as we downloaded the guide and saved a backup copy with her name attached to the file.  The folks at Progeny Press recommend this in case the original file is lost and also if you are planning on using the study guide with more than one student.

If you have a child who prefers using a workbook, Progeny Press graciously allows customers with the option of printing the study guides.  This will allow you to either place the guide in a binder or have the guide comb-bound.

The Hobbit Study Guide is for high school students.  My daughter is in the 7th grade and was able to do the study without difficulty.  As you select your guides, be sure to look at the ones near your student’s grade level for your child may be able to complete a guide meant for older students.

There are a few supplies you will need to complete the Hobbit study such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and a Bible.

The Hobbit Study Guide begins with a note to the instructor, a synopsis of The Hobbit, and then an author profile of J. R. R. Tolkien.  If you have never read The Hobbit, you will be interested to know:

Bilbo Baggins is a respectable hobbit – one of a race of small, quiet, country folk who inhabit The Shire, their pastoral corner of Middle-earth. One day he receives an unexpected visit from the great wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves. The dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, have decided to return to the land of their ancestors and reclaim the treasure taken from them years before by Smaug, a terrible dragon. On Gandalf’s recommendation, Thorin and his company wish to enlist Bilbo as their burglar. Although the idea of adventure appeals to something deep within him, Bilbo would much rather stay at home where he is comfortable and safe.

Nevertheless, Bilbo is drawn into the quest and soon faces trolls, goblins, and worse as he travels the great distance to the Lonely Mountain, where the dwarves’ treasure awaits – as does the dragon.                            ~ Progeny Press website

The guide continues with pre-reading activities, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension questions, characterization, comparisons of passage with Scripture, and more.  My daughter liked how the questions are phrased for they allow her to better understand the material.

As I mentioned earlier, my daughter was ready to use the interactive guide as soon as it was ready.  In fact, on the first day she completed a quarter of the guide before I realized it!  She likes the format that much.  Ordinarily, it takes about eight to ten weeks to complete a study.  That allows time for a student to read the book, complete the activities, and do the optional essay writing.  A high school student will be able to receive one English credit if he or she completes four study guides during a school year.

The teacher’s answer key is a blessing.  There are times when my mind is in a fog.  That is when I appreciate the answer key the most.  Another nice feature of the interactive guides is the teacher can grade the answers and make comments directly on the PDF.

We have finally found a product that combines reading quality literature with computer interaction.  As a result, we will be purchasing Progeny Press study guides for the next school year.

Currently, the cost of The Hobbit Study Guide is $18.99.  Progeny Press sells The Hobbit, book for $8.99.  I recommend purchasing the book rather than borrowing it from the library.  Reason being, your student will need the book longer than the normal loan period.

I invite you to read more reviews from the Old Schoolhouse Review Crew about the materials from Progeny Press.
