Product Review and Giveaway

Note to Homeschool Parents:

Do you intend for your children to do any of the following?

Attend public, private, or Catholic school for one class or full-time

To take dual courses

Attend college

If you said yes to any of the above, you and your children need this information.

“Go study!”  Have you ever told your children that?  Did they give you a quizzical look?  Children do not inherently know how to study or why it is even imperative do so.  They (and you) may be interested in knowing a large number of colleges actually require the in-coming freshmen to take a study skills class?  Yep, it is that important.  So, how do you go about giving your children an advantage by teaching them these necessary skills?  Use Study Smarts.

Jeremy Cox founded Study Smarts in 1997 after being a school teacher for three years.  He saw a need for students to utilize effective study skills in order to become successful students.  He now conducts what he refers to as the “University of Study Smarts.”

The results of those who have participated in his workshops are quite impressive.  You may be interested in reading the findings of a study done on Study Smarts.

Jeremy presents his workshops live to public , private, catholic, and charter schools and even to homeschool groups.  He has a DVD and workbook package available for parents to use at home.  Even though the DVD is a videotaped workshop filmed in front of an auditorium of students and staff members, most of the principles and concepts taught in the DVD will apply to homeschooling families.  The DVD is about 3 hours in length and is divided into 4 sessions.  Each student has a 32-page workbook to use throughout the workshop.  There are two levels of workshops.  One is for grades 5-8 and the other is for high school students.  The material is the same.  The only difference is Jeremy adapts his presentation to the age level of his participants.

A class on study skills may seem boring.  Study Smarts is no ordinary class.  Jeremy has a unique way of educating students on how to study by adding an element of entertainment.  He engages the students and cleverly utilizes learning styles so every student is able to relate to what is being presented.

Jeremy teaches more than just the mechanics for studying.  He explains throughout the presentation the 3 major things that make students successful, which are:

Successful Students - H.O.P.E. Home School Consulting

  • Self-Worth – Positive thinking is the foundation for student success.
  • Motivation – Learning what motivates them and then applying that motivation.
  • Study Skills – What effective study skills are and how to utilize them.

Here are a few things your children will learn:

  • Organization
  • Method for taking notes
  • 5 basic memory techniques
  • Ways to stay focused
  • How to eliminate procrastination
  • The difference between homework and studying
  • A technique for eliminating the need to cram for tests
  • Test taking strategies

There were times throughout the DVD that my daughter had aha moments.  Study Smarts gave us an opportunity to discuss some of the issues she has had.  One is the importance of organization.  In the past, I would talk until I was blue in the face about how she needs to organize her school material.  I showed her how to organize.  I bought her things to help her become organized.  And here is Jeremy in the DVD talking about organization.  Now, my daughter is ready to utilize the tools Jeremy suggested.  Well, at least she knows it isn’t just a mom thing.

Another issue she has dealt with is the need for staying focused.  My daughter learned techniques to help her eliminate distractions and how to set up a study space.  She also discovered that yes there is a difference between homework and studying; the importance of studying; and how to go about the process of studying so she really does understand the material.

Study SmartsYou may order Study Smarts online.  A DVD with one workbook costs $69.95.  Each additional workbook costs $10.  This may be a bit pricey for a number of homeschool families.  My suggestion is to use Study Smarts jointly with another family or at a co-op. That way even more students will benefit from the material.  Each student will need their own workbook though.

Studying is one of the essentials for academic success and needs to be taught.  The sooner your children know how to study and apply that information the better prepared they will be for college and in other areas of life.

Jeremy is graciously offering a giveaway for 2 winners.  You may enter into the giveaway for one 5-8 grade DVD/workbook package and one 9-12 grade DVD workbook package using the form below.
