See the Light: Behind the Scenes

Interview with Pat Holt

Biblical standpoints; effectiveness; engaging; provides a high school credit; cost and hands-on . . . which of these are important to you when you select homeschool curriculum?  All of those are important to me as well as knowing a bit about the background of the homeschool companies.  As you may already know, I am a big fan of the See the Light art curriculum.  What has drawn me (no pun intended) towards using the curriculum is the ministry the company provides.  They have a heart for sharing God with others and it shows in the art lessons.

Recently I discovered not all homeschool families know about See the Light.  Wow!  It is my desire for everyone to know about this great company.  I hope you will share this post on See the Light: Behind the Scenes with your friends.  So they will know how See the Light wants children to receive a quality art education but more importantly to know about God’s love.

Pat Holt, See the Light

I have wonderful email conversations with Pat Holt, the co-owner of See the Light.  One of those is an interview on See the Light: Behind the Scenes.  Here is what we had to say:

Angie:  “Hi Pat!  Thank you for sharing with my readers about See the Light.”

Pat:   It’s always a pleasure to chat with you Angie!  Thank you for the lovely invitation!  I’m really quite honored. 🙂

Angie:  “Tell us about your background.”

Pat:  Most importantly, I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior at the age of 12.

I’ve always loved being with children. From the time I was 14, I volunteered at church working with pre-schoolers. I knew the Lord was leading me to be a teacher.  Later, I volunteered at church with elementary and middle school ages.  This has gone on for decades, and I don’t want to stop. Now I get to be with my grandchildren also! J

In terms of education, I went to UCLA for my B.A, and to USC for my M.S.  I taught in the Santa Monica and Beverly Hills school districts, working with all kinds of children – EMR, EH, “regular”, and “gifted” at the elementary level.   I became a training teacher for UCLA students as well as a district consultant with a specialization in reading.

After our children were born, I wrote curriculum and books for both children and parents, but always kept volunteering in church ministry as well as speaking to mom’s groups.

In terms of my writing,  “The Early Childhood Kit” received the Gold Medallion award from the Evangelical Publishers Association. “When You Feel Like Screaming – Help for Frustrated Mothers” has been translated into 7 languages, and featured on a multitude of radio and television programs.   “Don’t Give in, Give Choices” received the 2010 Christian Choice Award.

Angie:  “That is quite impressive.  What inspired you to start the See the Light business?”

Pat:  During the years of caregiving my parents, I began to ask God, “What do you want me to do next?”  I remembered, as a small child, the thrill of seeing an artist draw a chalk art picture from the Bible, and then reveal the black light “surprise”.   I did not have the privilege of learning to draw as a child, and thought, “How wonderful it would be to help children learn to draw and integrate it with the teaching of God’s Word.”

My husband and I prayed about this idea for a loooooong time.  So did our adult children. We firmly believed that if God were truly leading us to do this He would provide the artists and the producer we would need.  And God did.  God has given us the most wonderful Christian artists who love the Lord, and have a passion for helping children both learn to draw and learn more about His Word.  Our incredible Christian producer is the same.  Each individual on our team has come as a result of answered prayer!

Angie:  “How long has See the Light been in business?”

Pat:  Our very first DVD, “Crossmaker”, was released in March of 2010.  So you can see that we are a very new company, and have been working very hard.  We now have 24 DVDs: – 9 for ART CLASS, 10 for ART PROJECTS, 5 for BIBLE STORIES.

Angie:  “You have accomplished quite a bit in four years!  How did you meet the artists that are now a part of See the Light?”

Pat:  Oh Angie!  They came by prayer, totally by prayer.  I never met either Gloria Kohlmann or Jim Pence until they flew out to Los Angeles for filming!  Talk about a faith venture!  But – – – they knew and we knew it was right!  We had drenched our decisions in prayer, spent a ton of time on the phone with them, researched their previous work, and were confident God was bringing us together for His purposes.  Kip Perry knew Pat Knepley from his church, local to our area.  She and I talked together, and she told me her idea for ART CLASS. I was thrilled and overwhelmed by God’s goodness.  Neither of us could wait to begin filming!

Angie”  “Are there any other employees besides the artists?”

Pat:  Our only other employee is our dearly beloved Christian producer Kip Perry!  He has mentored us every single step of the way!  My husband is an engineer.  I’m a teacher.  Neither of us knew anything about producing DVDs.  Kip has taught us sooooo much. He considers SEE THE LIGHT his ministry also.  How we rejoice with the amazing team God has brought together who love Him and are – truly – called according to His purpose!

Angie:  “How is See the Light different from other art curricula?”

Pat:  Oh my!  First of all, every single lesson is integrated with Scripture.  There are NO workbooks ever.  The DVD drawing lessons are step-by-step lessons taught by master teachers.  The element of the black light surprise in the Bible Story drawing lessons is totally unique. The production quality throughout is outstanding.   And – the price is sooooooo reasonable!

Angie:  “What age range is appropriate for those using See the Light?”

Pat:  ART CLASS is being used by ages 4 +.  We recommend ART PROJECTS for ages 10+. ART PROJECTS is also suitable for high school fine arts credit, which is really important for the home educator.  BIBLE STORY art lessons are recommended for ages 6 +.  But, we have adults using our products also – even art teachers J

Angie:  “How much teaching do the parents need to do with using the art lessons?’

Pat:  Our desire is to relieve homeschooling moms, and to help those in church volunteer positions.  That’s why the lessons are so directed by the master teacher.  Ideally, the home educator, church volunteer (or the children – depending upon the ages) gathers the materials needed, turns on the DVD, and lets the master teachers teach.

Angie:  “What products do we have to look forward to in the future?”

Pat: Great question Angie!  Pat Knepley is preparing UNIT STUDIES based on the ART PROJECTS series. They are fabulous!  I believe we’ll be releasing “Sunflowers” UNIT STUDY later this month, God willing J  Jim Pence is preparing several e-book series, which will be amazing.  His first will be on learning gospel chalk art.  I cannot WAIT for what is coming.  It’s all very exciting!

Angie:  “Very exciting indeed!  I am so looking forward to seeing each of them.  Pat, I know you are very talented. Please share your other accomplishments?”

Pat:  You’re kind Angie!  I’ve mentioned my writing and speaking.  I also spend a TON of time with my 6 grandchildren – 2 who live close by and 4 who live back east. We visit them, and they come for a month during the summer.  I also continue to do volunteer teaching w/ pre-schoolers, elementary age children, and middle school girls J  I used to play in tennis tournaments, but now play tennis once or twice a week just for fun!

Angie:  “What else do you want to share with my readers?’’

Pat:  It is an honor and a privilege to strive to be a help and an encouragement to homeschooling families with SEE THE LIGHT.  Through e-mail, I have met some incredible moms – like you Angie – who are exceedingly talented, love the Lord, and are raising their children to know, love, trust, obey, and serve Him.   To be able to “see” God working in the body of Christ with the next generation has been a joyous experience.

Angie:  “Thank you Pat for your time.  I appreciate you so much and feel blessed to be associated with See the Light.”
