Honing Your Study Skills
Homeschool is back in session. It is time to bring out those books and begin studying. Wait. What does studying look like to a student who has never actually needed to study? In the Hands of a Child has a notebooking unit called Honing Your Study Skills. It is a tool to help children become even better students.
A number of people may think homeschool students do not need to study. That is not exactly the case. Sure, the students can read the material and may do well when quizzed. But, the students may not do so well when it comes time to earn dual credits unless the students prepare themselves by gaining effective study skills in advance.
The Honing Your Study Skills Note Pack is for students in the 5th to 10th grade. Included is a 5-day planning guide. The material may be completed sooner depending upon your student and what activities you choose to complete.
Honing Your Study Skills provides students with 13 tips for successful study habits. Those tips are:
- Manage your time
- Study in a good location
- Be alert
- Prepare snacks
- Stay organized
- Know your learning style
- Learn key facts first
- Take good notes
- Use flash cards and other study tools
- Learn new terms
- Make associations
- Study with a friend
- Avoid disturbances
There are 15 activities for the student to complete that revolve around the 13 tips. One of the activities is to list what type of reference material to use when looking for facts, definitions, synonyms, as well as other types of information. Another activity is to create a study calendar.
My son is not one for completing notebooks or lapbooks. So, I had him read through the material. He felt he did not learn anything new from what he already learned from me. But, he was pleased to know it is okay to have music playing despite what I may think. Having snacks nearby was also a plus.
The regular price for the Honing Your Skill Curriculum is $12. It is currently at a special price for $5.
